Kornati Cup Regatta - April/May

The Kornati Cup Sailing Regatta was founded almost by accident in 1984 on the day of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, when a group of sailing enthusiasts sailed across in three ships from the island of Murter to Piškera. The following year, the first race with participants from Austria and Croatia was organized, with 27 sailboats competing – and it has since become a tradition over the easter period. By 1988, 118 sailboats were competing in the Kornati Cup, and it has quickly become one of the biggest regattas on the east coast of the Adriatic. The Kornati Cup settled in its present format in 2001, and it is now a unique combination of sport and entertainment, both for professionals and for those to whom winning isn’t everything.

Naturally, this regatta is for those interested in sport adventure. For others, who prefer enjoying sailing, there are still three days of sailing in five stages: a so called «triangle» sailing in Murter Sea - Biograd – Proversa – Piškera – Murter and unforgettable fiestas with good domestic meals and wine. One can also experience the «unforgettable sirocco». Back in 2004 and 1986 all participants remained captured on one island like Robinson because of this wind. Although it is hard to imagine nowadays with all the intense communication systems and modern transportation means, it is still possible in Kornati archipelago. This too makes this regatta unique and one of the most demanding ones existing. Its main organisers are Jarušica Ltd. Murter, Yacht club Kornati Murter, Tourist Association of Murter Municipality, National Park Kornati and Pitter Yachting. Co-organizers are marina Hramina, marina Kornati Biograd and ACI Opatija - marina Piškera. Kornati Cup is held under sponsorship of Murter Municipality every year at the end of April and beginning of May.
