Island Murter Geography
Island Murter is situated to the North-west of the islands surrounding Šibenik, and it is the largest island in the Šibenik - Knin County, both by its size (18.6 km2) and population.
The natural geographic features of Island Murter are similar to those found in nearby islands. Murter stretches in a North-west to South-east direction, bringing it parallel with the Croatian mainland. The predominance of limestone and dolomite reserves gives the island a rugged topography. The profusion of natural harbours and inlets along the coast have played a significant role in the early settlement of the island as well as the more recent development of tourism. The island benefits from the typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers. Winters are generally mild and rainy while summers are mostly dry and hot. The karstic environment has resulted in a lack of surface water, leaving the only hydrological features in the dolomite zone to the south-east of the island, where you may find a large pool situated in a field called Jezero.
